After reading the other comments, I cooked it on high for just under 2 hours then low for 40. It did take on a burnt smell, but very little of the outside was actually burned. The middle cooked through but didn’t really taste much like s’mores. With ice cream and cool whip it wasn’t bad but won’t be a favorite like so many other recipes.

I have no idea about how to check the altitude of the crockpot. It’s a Hamilton Beach that has a high and low setting manual crockpot.

I don’t know what I did wrong. The outside of my cake burned. I Followed the directions. My cake mix did call for three eggs it was the Pillsbury brand I followed the recipe instead. Could that be reason it burned? It was cooked on high 2 1/2 hours in crockpot bag Hamilton beach crockpot.

I wonder if altitude has any bearing on crockin’ a cake. Are y’all at a high altitude?

    Darlene,
You may be running into a problem with you slow cooker cooking to hot. Make sure you take the lid off while the cake cools so the cake can set.

  7. Mary

So bummed it didn’t turn out. It looks like everyone else, the outside burned about an hour and a half in and the inside was gooey and the whole cake tasted burnt :-( Its still sounds like a good recipe, I might try it in the oven just to see.

You should look at the video attached to this recipe. We did some slow cooker comparisons so you can see how different they cook. http://crockingirls.com/recipes/cheddar-mac/
We love the GE. Especially when doing desserts.

Mine didn’t turn out that well either. It was cooked all the way through. I did HIGH for 2 1/2 hours, took the lid off and did the WARM setting for 30. It looked fudgey and was chewy.

I made this tonight too and had the same result :(. I cooked it for 3 hours and the middle never cooked, it stayed gooey. The graham cracker crust started to take on a burnt flavor. We did try to eat it with some ice cream so it was partially salvaged, but I must have done something wrong…

I have the same problem as Bobbie. Cake was so high, then fell in and the middle is still VERY runny. The sides are a bit burned. I was so excited to make this and now so dissapointed!

My five year old son and I tried to make this cake tonight. I used a crock pot brand slow cooker. The sides burned and we could not get the middle to bake. :( What do you think I did wrong? Do you think that brand just cooks to hot to make cakes, etc?? I am thinking about ordering the GE brand slow cooker that you reviewed on your site. Do you think that would work better?

I wish I had seen this earlier, Bobbie. Yes the toothpick test works, but I would have suggested rather than crocking for another 30 minutes, to just turn off your crock and remove the lid. It will keep cooking, just much slower. I hope it didn’t burn the sides!

I have this cake going in the crock right now. It was going real good, it rose almost to the top. It just fell and doesn’t seem to be done after 2 1/2 hours. I am going to leave it in for a 1/2 hour more. Is there a way to tell if it is done? Does the toothpick test work with this one?
